The four measurements I would make

First measure the usable floor position: width, depth and height, including any obstruction above the appliance. Then compare the cabinet dimensions for the exact model and finish. Check whether the depth includes the handle and whether the height includes the hinge.

Next add the required ventilation gaps. Finally, measure the working space with the door open. The door needs enough travel for ordinary access and, where relevant, removal of shelves and drawers. A cabinet that slides into the opening may still be awkward or unsuitable to use.

  • Record cabinet W × D × H with the units shown.
  • Add the model’s required left, right, back and top clearances.
  • Check handle projection, hinge height and door-opening direction.
  • Check the open-door aisle and shelf or drawer removal.

Why the gaps must be model-specific

GE and Danby illustrate how much the installation requirement can differ. These are documented examples, not a recommendation to apply the same gaps to another model. The totals below combine the cabinet and stated ventilation only; door swing is a separate check.

Cubic feet do not describe the opening

Capacity is a storage-volume figure. It does not tell you the width of a shelf, the height of a bottle opening or how much of the total belongs to a freezer. The shape and accessibility of the space matter for everyday use.

For a combined fridge-freezer, compare the compartment figures as well as the total. The Midea WHD-113FSS1 lists 2.2 cu. ft. refrigerated and 0.9 cu. ft. freezer. A 3.1 cu. ft. headline therefore cannot be treated as 3.1 cu. ft. of lunch storage.

Measure the containers you actually use. If internal dimensions are not documented, do not reverse-engineer them from exterior dimensions or a product photo. Ask for exact measurements or inspect the unit before making a critical fit decision.

Installation mistakes worth avoiding

Do not use shipping dimensions as cabinet dimensions. Packaging is useful for planning delivery access, but it does not establish the installed size. Likewise, a family specification can describe a different hinge, door or finish from the unit you are buying.

Do not treat a freestanding fridge as a built-in appliance. An opening can be physically large enough while still preventing the specified airflow. Follow the floor, ambient-temperature and electrical requirements as well as the dimensions.

If manufacturer and retailer values disagree, resolve the exact shipped model before ordering for a tight space. The finder on the main guide excludes models with incomplete or conflicting installation data when dimensions are entered; it does not turn an unknown into a confirmed fit.

A quick measurement record

Write down the exact model, available W × D × H, cabinet W × D × H, required gaps, handle/hinge notes, door swing and the source of each figure. Keep the cabinet and total installation measurements in separate fields.

Check the delivery route too: building entrance, lift, stairs, room doorway and any turn into the final position. Use packaged dimensions and actual shipping weight for that job. Ask the retailer about delivery arrangements instead of assuming the appliance will be carried into the room.

Work through a fit check without guessing

Take the GE example: 18.75 inches of cabinet width plus two half-inch side gaps equals 19.75 inches. Its 20.125-inch cabinet depth plus the two-inch rear gap gives 22.125 inches, and 33.375 inches of height plus the two-inch top gap gives 35.375 inches. These calculated dimensions describe the cabinet and those gaps; they do not include a clear walking route or every door-access need.

A space larger than that envelope still needs the open-door check. GE lists 37 inches of depth with the door open. Establish the measurement reference and keep the required rear clearance rather than treating the open-door figure as interchangeable with the closed installation depth. The GE review applies the figures to a specific buying decision.

Questions before you choose

How much space should I leave around a mini fridge?

Use the exact model’s instructions. Requirements differ; the examples in this article range from smaller side gaps to five inches around several surfaces. There is no universal clearance.

Can I use exterior width to estimate shelf width?

No. Insulation, door bins and internal structures reduce and shape the usable area. Obtain the actual internal measurement when a particular container must fit.

Why does the finder exclude some models?

When you enter dimensions, it excludes models without enough verified installation data to compare. That prevents missing or conflicting dimensions from being presented as a confirmed fit.
